The Florida SSYRA School Reading Competition

Reading doesn’t have to be solo. In Sunshine State Reader, every book a student finishes adds to their school’s total on a live statewide leaderboard — so a class, a grade, or a whole school can pull together and climb the rankings.

Read for your school

Pick your school once (from every K–8 school in Florida), then just read. Each completed book bumps your school up two leaderboards at once: your county and the whole state.

  • No personal data is ever shared
  • Only books-completed totals per school
  • Parent verification required to set up

How the leaderboard works

It takes about a minute to set up and then runs in the background all year:

  1. Choose your school. Search 2,900+ Florida public and charter K–8 schools by county — a parent verification step keeps it safe for kids.
  2. Read and mark books complete. Every finished book from the 2026-2027 SSYRA list adds one to your school’s tally.
  3. Watch your rank. See your school’s standing in your county and across Florida, and pull to refresh for the latest totals.

Built for classrooms and media centers

The leaderboard turns the whole reading year into a friendly, school-spirit competition. Media specialists and teachers can rally readers around a shared goal — “let’s get our school into the county top 5” — without managing a single spreadsheet. Pair it with the classroom how-to guide to launch SSYRA in your room.

Private by design

The competition is built to be safe for young readers. The leaderboard only ever stores books-completed totals per school — never names, never personal information about any student. Setup requires a parent-verification step, and the app collects nothing about your child. See our privacy policy for details.

Leaderboard FAQ

How do I get my school on the leaderboard?

Download the free Sunshine State Reader app, choose your school during setup (a quick parent-verification step keeps it safe for kids), and start marking SSYRA books complete. Your very first completed book puts your school on the board.

How does a school earn its ranking?

Every SSYRA book a student finishes adds one to their school’s total for the current school year. The more books your school’s readers complete, the higher it climbs — in both your county and statewide rankings.

Is the leaderboard free?

Yes — the app and the leaderboard are completely free. There’s no account to create beyond the one-time parent verification used to pick your school.

Is my child’s information shared on the leaderboard?

No. The leaderboard only ever stores books-completed totals per school — never names or any personal information about a student. Setup requires parent verification, and the app collects nothing about your child.

What if I can’t find my school?

The list includes every active K–8 public and charter school in Florida, pulled from the state’s Master School ID directory. Use the county filter and try a shorter version of the name — most schools appear under their official name.

How can our class or whole school climb the rankings?

Get everyone reading and picking the same school. A class, a grade, or an entire school all add to one shared total — the fastest way up the county and statewide boards. Teachers: the classroom guide shows how to organize it.

When does the leaderboard reset?

It runs for the current SSYRA school year (2026-2027). Each new cycle starts fresh, so every school gets another shot at the top.

Put your school on the map. Download the free app, pick your school, and your next finished book starts the climb up the Florida leaderboard.
