Sunshine State Reader

Last updated: July 2, 2026

The Sunshine State Reader app stores your reading progress on your device and does not collect or share any child's name, identity, or personal profile. The only data the app sends off the device is an anonymous, aggregate per-school reading tally that contributes to a shared school leaderboard, described in detail below.

All reading progress, settings, and achievements are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. This on-device data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us.

School Leaderboard (anonymous, aggregate)

When a book is marked complete in the app, the app contributes to a shared, anonymous school leaderboard. To do this, it sends to Apple's CloudKit service, in a public CloudKit database: your school's identifier and name, your county, the school year, and a running count of books completed at that school.

No child's name, identity, or personal information is ever uploaded. The leaderboard holds only aggregate per-school counts — it cannot identify an individual child or reader. The tally your device contributes is added to the school-wide total.

This feature currently has no opt-out: contributing an anonymous count to your school's leaderboard is part of how the leaderboard feature works. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at support@sunshinestatereader.com.

Legal basis (GDPR): our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)) in providing a shared classroom reading leaderboard using only anonymous, aggregate per-school counts. Because the data uploaded does not identify any individual, the impact on any individual's privacy is minimal.

Website Analytics

This website (sunshinestatereader.com) uses Google Analytics to understand aggregate visitor activity — such as how many people visit and which pages are viewed. Google Analytics collects standard technical information including your approximate location (derived from IP address), device and browser type, and the pages you visit. This applies only to the website and is entirely separate from the app.

Analytics on this site is configured for internal operations only: it is not used for advertising, ad personalization, or cross-site/cross-app tracking, and we do not sell or share this data. You can opt out using your browser's privacy settings, by blocking cookies, or with Google's opt-out browser add-on.

Legal basis (GDPR): your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you may withdraw at any time using the opt-out methods above.

Purposes and legal bases at a glance

Categories of personal data

The app does not collect any personal data that identifies a child (no name, email, account, or profile). The school leaderboard data (school, county, school year, count) is aggregate and does not identify any individual. On the website, Google Analytics processes standard technical/usage data (approximate location from IP, device/browser type, pages viewed).

Recipients

We do not sell your data or share it for advertising. The service providers who process data on our behalf or receive data as part of a feature are:

International transfers

These providers are based in the United States and may process data in the US and elsewhere. They rely on their own safeguards for international transfers, such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and/or Standard Contractual Clauses.

Retention

We do not retain any personal data about you ourselves. On-device data (reading progress, settings, achievements) persists on your device until you delete it or remove the app. The anonymous, aggregate leaderboard counts held in Apple's CloudKit are retained for as long as the leaderboard feature is offered. Website analytics data is retained according to the retention period configured on our Google Analytics property.

Your rights

Under the GDPR / UK GDPR you have the right to request access to, rectification of, or erasure of your personal data; to restrict or object to its processing; to data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent (this does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal). Because the app collects no data that identifies an individual and the leaderboard is anonymous aggregate, we may be unable to link leaderboard data to any specific person; where we cannot identify you from the data we hold, some rights may not apply. To exercise your rights, contact us at support@sunshinestatereader.com.

Right to lodge a complaint

If you are in the EU/EEA, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (see the list of members at the European Data Protection Board). If you are in the UK, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Automated decision-making and profiling

We do not carry out automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects within the meaning of Article 22 GDPR.

Source of data

We obtain data only directly from you (or your device's activity in the app), not from any third-party sources.

Is providing data required?

You are under no statutory or contractual obligation to provide personal data. Website analytics is optional; declining simply means we receive no analytics about your visit.

External Links

The app contains links to Amazon (affiliate links) and WorldCat (library search). These links open in your device's default web browser. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those websites. All external links require a parent/guardian verification step before opening.

Children's Privacy

Sunshine State Reader is designed to be used by children under parental supervision. In line with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and Article 8 of the GDPR, we take particular care with children's data:

If you are a parent or guardian and have any questions about how the app handles your child's activity, please contact us at support@sunshinestatereader.com.
