How to Help Your Child Read the SSYRA Books (Parent Guide)
Your child’s school is doing the Sunshine State Young Readers Award and you want to help — but where do you start? Here is the short version.
1. Find your child’s division
SSYRA has three lists by grade: SSYRA Jr. for K–2 (often read aloud together), grades 3–5, and grades 6–8. Pick the one that matches your child’s grade and browse the titles together.
2. Find the books
Every book page on this site links straight to your library (via WorldCat) and to Amazon, so you can borrow or buy in a couple of taps. Libraries usually stock the current SSYRA nominees, so that is the cheapest place to start.
3. Aim for three by spring
Most schools ask students to read at least three books from their list to earn a vote. Spread across the school year, that is very doable — about one book every month or two. Each book page lists the page count and Lexile measure so you can pick something that fits your reader.
4. Read together for the youngest kids
For K–2, the SSYRA Jr. titles are made to be read aloud. Sharing the book is the point — talk about the pictures, guess what happens next, and let your child “vote” for their favorite at home.
5. Track it so it feels like progress
Kids stick with goals they can see. The free Sunshine State Reader app lets your child log each book, watch their count climb toward their earned vote, unlock achievements, and count down to vote day — no account, no data collection, all on the device.
